Day 1

Saturday 8/23/08
Roosville MT/Canadian border - Grave Creek Campground

Time Travelled: 2 hrs 47 min
Distance: 24.35 miles

Food Eaten: 1 cafe mocha, 1 whole wheat bagel w/huckleberry cream cheese, 1 apple, 1 small side salad w/oriental dressing, spicy cashew w/tofu, veggies and rice, 1 1/2 spring rolls, brown rice

Today started out with a nice, relaxing drive to the Canadian border. We passed through several picturesque Montana towns that reminded me somewhat of the Oregon coastline. When we arrived at the Port of Roosville, we parked in the lot of a bar and casino to set up our rigs. It was soon realized that we would be much better off if we left the laptop and mandolin behind.

After repacking, we finally set off on our way at about 1:45 pm. My mother tried hard to hold back the tears as she hugged us both goodbye and we did the best we could to reassure her that everything would be ok. We'd call whenever we could and of course use the Spot.

It wasn't until we were pedaling along the tree lined pavement that it truly hit me. We were really going to do this!

We rode on 10 short miles more and found ourselves back in the city of Eureka, which we had just passed through 2 hours ago in the car. Joe and I fueled up on lunch at a small Chinese restaurant and then it was back in the saddle again. 12 miles and 2 hours later, we finally arrived with very sore rear ends at our desination: Grave Creek Campground.

White papers stapled to picnic tables tell us that as of yesterday, the campground is temporarily closed. Our exhausted bodies tell us otherwise, and we set up camp anyway. I think sleep will come easy tonight.
