Day 5

Wednesday 8/27/08
Red Meadow Lake - Whitefish

Time Traveled: 3 hours
Distance: 33.48 miles

Food Eaten: Coffee w/sugar, dates, macadamias, Gardenburger w/fries, veggie pizza, beer

Today's ride was our longest ride yet. We were lucky in that it was mostly downhill. The last 8 miles were on pavement, but we ended up climbing a few hills. We were low on energy as well as extremely cold and sore by the time we got into town. All of our belongings, including our own bodies were caked in mud. The ride down the mountain was all in rain.

Because of this, we concluded a room in a hotel would be best for the night. This would be done only after eating, of course. We met two ladies who stayed at the North Fork Hostel right after we had devoured some calories and were walking out the door of a typical Whitefish bar & grill. They were concluding their trip of Glacier National Park here in this cute, bustling town with all its shops and restaurants.

A good two hours or so was spent cleaning up ourselves and the gear, and then after much pondering over our dining choices, we set off on foot in search of more food. I ended up wishing we had picked a healthier option than pizza by the the time we left the local beer and grub chain that we decided on. My stomach ached from all the bread and cheese.

We stayed up late in our weird motel room texting friends and family all while giggled at a Bruce Willis movie. Sleep, however, did not come as easily as expected. I think the room was too warm. The cold, harsh wind of the mountain air is something that we were starting to get used to, and we found that cuddling up naked in mating down sleeping bags inside our little tent to be very comfortable under such environmental circumstances.

This morning, we woke up to snow 100 feet above us and there was frost on the ground. Tonight, we sleep in an over heated room with Willis and his sidekick Sarah Jessica Parker brings me to tears in an over-obvious, 90's action flick. I fall asleep to the slightly disturbing image of them in a loving embrace. Contrast of elements, perhaps?
